First 30 Days After a Frameless Shower Install: What Your Contractor Didn't Tell You

The first 30 days after frameless shower glass installation is the single most important window for protecting that glass for the next decade. Most contractors don’t mention it because their job ends at installation. Here’s what to do daily, weekly, and what to apply in month 1 to lock in glass clarity for 3+ years.
If you just paid RM 3,000-8,000 for a frameless shower installation, the first month determines whether that glass still looks new in three years or starts hazing by month 18.
This is the maintenance window your contractor probably didn’t walk you through.
Why the first 30 days matter so much
Brand-new shower glass is at its cleanest, smoothest, most acceptive state. The silica surface is fresh — no mineral deposits, no soap residue, no micro-scratches from years of cleaning.
This is when you can:
- Apply a glass coating with maximum bonding strength (it bonds to clean glass, not contaminated).
- Build the squeegee habit before bad habits form.
- Establish good cleaning chemistry (dish soap, not aggressive products).
Miss this window and you’ll spend the next 3 years catching up.
Day 1-7: don’t do this
- Don’t use the shower for the first 24 hours after installation. The silicone seals need to cure. Most installers say 24-48 hours.
- Don’t use any commercial bathroom cleaner. They’re too aggressive for new glass.
- Don’t use a scratchy sponge or steel wool, ever. Will permanently scratch the surface.
- Don’t apply a glass coating yet. Wait until all silicone has fully cured (about 7 days) before applying any coating.
Day 1-7: do this
- Buy a quality squeegee (Vileda 27cm, RM 19.90 at Tesco).
- Buy a microfibre cloth 4-pack (Daiso, RM 5.90).
- Buy plain white vinegar (sundry shop, RM 3.50) and a spray bottle (Watsons, RM 4.90).
- Buy Mama Lemon dish soap (RM 4).
- Start squeegee habit Day 2 onwards. Pull straight down only.
Day 8-30: the protection decision
By Day 8, all silicone is cured and the glass surface is still essentially brand new. This is the perfect window to apply a glass coating.
Your two main options:
Option A: EnduroShield DIY kit (~RM 218)
- 30-minute application.
- Cures in 8 hours.
- Lasts ~3 years.
- Reapply yourself when needed.
Option B: ClearShield Professional (~RM 600-1,500)
- Pro installer visits for 1-2 hours.
- Same-day shower use.
- Lasts ~5-10 years.
- Higher upfront, longer warranty.
Both work. Choose based on budget + how DIY-comfortable you are. Either is dramatically better than no coating.
Daily routine you should already have by Day 14
After every shower (30 seconds):
- Squeegee top-to-bottom in straight strokes.
- Quick warm rinse from showerhead.
- Air-dry. Done.
If you don’t establish this in the first 2 weeks, you probably won’t. The habit needs to form while the glass is new.
Day 30 checkpoint
By Day 30, evaluate:
- Is your squeegee habit consistent? If not, what’s blocking it (squeegee location, time, motivation)?
- Did you apply a coating yet? If yes, water should bead like marbles when shower runs. If no, plan when you will.
- Any visible mineral spots or hard water marks? Run the vinegar test — should remove them easily at this stage.
The glass should look exactly like installation day. If anything looks off at Day 30, fix it now — the longer you wait, the harder it gets.
What to expect month 2-36
With coating + daily squeegee + weekly clean:
- Glass looks like Day 1 for at least 24 months.
- Cleaning effort: about 2 minutes a week.
- No visible mineral deposits.
- Soap rinses off without scrubbing.
Without coating + occasional cleaning only:
- Month 6-12: light haze starts at bottom corners.
- Month 18: visible cloudy patches you have to scrub at.
- Month 30+: permanent etching, RM 500-1,200 polish quotes start arriving.
Protect this glass for 3 years
EnduroShield's DIY kit bonds chemically to shower glass. Australian-made, TÜV Rheinland tested, applies in 10-30 minutes.

My contractor installed the shower yesterday. Can I apply EnduroShield tomorrow?
Wait at least 7 days. The silicone seals need full cure time before any coating is applied. Applying too early can disrupt the silicone-to-glass bond and lead to leaks later. Day 8-30 is the ideal window.
What if I missed the first-30-days window? Already 6 months in.
Still better to coat now than not at all. The glass surface still has minimal contamination at 6 months with normal use. Do a thorough vinegar clean first to remove any starting mineral deposits, then coat. You’ll get good results, just slightly less optimal than Day 8 application.
Should I tell my contractor I’m planning to coat the glass?
Not strictly necessary, but helpful for the silicone cure timing. Most contractors will say “safe to use after 24 hours” — the silicone is structurally safe at 24h but not fully cured for chemical work like coating until ~7 days.
What about the metal frame or hinges — do those need protection?
Chrome or brushed-steel fittings benefit from a wipe-down with mild soap weekly (no harsh chemicals) and the occasional silicone-based polish. Brass fittings need more care — don’t use vinegar near them. Most modern Malaysian shower installs use chrome or aluminium — both low-maintenance.
